Professional

Mr. Wheeler is a forensic biomechanics expert with a specialty in injury biomechanics in automobile, sport/recreation, and occupational accidents. Since 1988 Mr. Wheeler has provided biomechanical consulting services in personal injury and product liability civil litigation cases as well as in criminal matters. Automobile case types include rollover, high-speed frontal, rear-end, and side collisions involving analyses of occupant injury mechanics and evaluation of restraint system use and effectiveness. He has also analyzed impact dynamics and injury biomechanics in various sport/recreation incidents including cycling, skiing, motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile, boating, baseball, hockey, rollerblading, volleyball, basketball, football, and soccer. Criminal cases investigations have involved impact biomechanics, bullet trajectory analyses, human performance, occupant dynamics, and driver identification.

Mr. Wheeler has been retained as an expert witness in the area of injury biomechanics in more than twenty states and in three countries. Since 1988, he has testified in approximately 150 jury trials in state courts in six states (California, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana) and in Federal Courts in three states (California, Colorado, Alabama). Mr. Wheeler has testified at the request of counsel for Plaintiffs and Defendants in civil matters and for Prosecuting Attorneys in criminal matters. The statistics of his trial testimony history (available since 1994) is 40% on behalf of Plaintiffs and 60% on behalf of Defendants.

In 1991, Mr. Wheeler founded Biomechanics Research & Consulting, Inc. in Los Angeles, California and expanded to Denver, Colorado in 1996. In 2000, Biomechanics Research & Consulting merged with Knott Laboratory and in 2001 Mr. Wheeler formed Vector Scientific, Inc. (VSI), bringing together his nearly 15 years of forensic consulting experience and the complimentary services of other professionals in the areas of biomechanics, engineering, and animation. As President, Mr. Wheeler presides over the VSI offices in Torrance, CA (Los Angeles area) and Evergreen, CO (Denver area) and as Director of Biomechanics he oversees the consulting and research activities of the Biomechanics Division. Mr. Wheeler also serves on the Graduate Faculty as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State University.

As a result of his expertise in forensic biomechanics, Mr. Wheeler was invited to speak on “Research and Applied Science in Forensic Biomechanics” to the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) in Zürich, Switzerland in 2001 and subsequently served as Chairman of the ISB Forensic Biomechanics Session in Dunedin, New Zealand in 2003. In 1999, research by Wheeler and his colleagues measuring cervical muscle dynamics in live human volunteers during rear-end automobile impacts was nominated as a Finalist for the International Clinical Biomechanics Award. He has co-authored approximately 35 scientific publications and his research has been presented at academic and professional conferences throughout the United States, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, France, and New Zealand. Mr. Wheeler has served as a referee for academic and scientific research papers for the International Society of Biomechanics, Society of Automotive Engineers, and the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention.

Mr. Wheeler received his Master of Science (M.S.) in Biomechanics from UCLA in 1993 where he studied musculoskeletal injury and his thesis research on knee injury biomechanics and bicycle pedal designs were featured in national bicycling publications and subsequently published in international scientific journals and presented at the American College of Sports Medicine and the International Society of Biomechanics in Paris, France. While at UCLA, Mr. Wheeler was a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Kinesiology and Department of Physiological Science, a Research Assistant in the UCLA Biomechanics Laboratory on projects sponsored by the United States Olympic Sport Science and Technology Committee, and a Staff Research Associate in the UCLA Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Mr. Wheeler received his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Sport Biomechanics from the University of Connecticut in 1987.
