Dave Raymond - photo Biomedical Engineer

Mr. Raymond joined VSI in June 2002 after working in automotive safety for General Motors where he specialized in occupant protection from 1998 to 2002. He has experience in automotive safety system design ranging from vehicle crashworthiness to airbag design. He has carried out numerous studies on the potential of inflation-induced injuries from a variety of side airbag systems, and has conducted full-scale vehicle performance testing of airbag systems.

Mr. Raymond has performed both physical testing as well as mathematical techniques such as finite element method and rigid body modeling. He participated in the University of Michigan chapter of the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (CIREN), where regular accident case review was carried out to provide an understanding of injury mechanisms in vehicle collisions.

Mr. Raymond received his Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from Wayne State University with an emphasis on automotive-related trauma in 2001. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Mechanics with an option in Biomechanics from Michigan State University in 1998. His senior thesis was done under the supervision of the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Lab in conjunction with the Michigan State Veterinary Hospital investigating the biomechanical properties of normal and pathological canine cervical spines. Mr. Raymond is currently pursuing a Ph.D. from Wayne State University in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on head impact biomechanics and skull fracture tolerance.
