Biomedical Engineer
Dr. Bach is an associate professor in the Engineering Divison of the Colorado School of Mines and also serves as an associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthoedics at the University of Colorado in Denver. He joined VSI in 2009 as a special consultant in Musculoskeletal, Orthopaedic, occupational and sports biomechanics. His techniques used range from mechanical testing to computer simulation and modeling.
Professor Bach's research focuses on the application of engineering design, instrumentation, testing, and simulation to problems in Biomedical Engineering. He oversees a team of researchers working on a variety of projects being performed jointly at the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Labs at the University of Colorado as well as at the Bioengineering Research Labs at the Colorado School of Mines. These labs are becoming a major center for applications in Computer Assisted Surgery and Medical Robotics. Computer Assisted Surgery (CAS) will revolutionize the delivery of medical treatment facilitating minimally invasive techniques, more complex procedures, and faster recovery times. Additionally, CAS systems and techniques will allow surgeons to tailor procedures to patient specific information further enhancing the quality of treatment. Dr. Bach also serves as the chairman and lead author of the ASTM International committee (F04.05) responsible for drafting standards for the evaluation and development of Computer Assisted Surgery Systems. Additional research projects include instrumentation and sensor development, device design, biomedical modeling, injury prevention and repair, and analysis of normal and pathologic biomechanics.
Personal
Dr. Bach received his Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering from the University of California Davis and his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the State University of New York Buffalo. Joel is an avid photographer and Colorado back-country explorer.
