Senior Engineer

Dr. Zhang brings an impressive depth and breadth of automotive safety industry experience to the VSI team. In addition to her mathematical and computer simulation expertise, her experience in automotive safety across crash field data analysis, crash testing, and occupant restraint system design places her in an unique position to advise our clients on complex cases involving high-speed crashes, occupant injuries, and occupant restraint system performance.

During Dr. Zhang's decade of work in the automotive industry, she has authored more than a dozen scientific publications in the field of automotive safety and occupant protection. Her work has focused on advanced computer simulation and optimization of occupant restraints including seat belt systems, frontal airbags and side airbags. Her previous work has also included the evaluation of a human finite element model for investigating injuries in high speed rear-end, Indy Racing League (IRL) car crashes.

Dr. Zhang has been recognized for her outstanding presentations at technical conferences and was recently invited to give the Keynote Speech at the China MADYMO User's Conference in Sanya, China. She has served as a technical paper reviewer for the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Dr. Zhang has been awarded two Trade Secrets recognizing her excellent work and contributions to automotive safety.

During her career, Dr. Zhang's has been repeatedly placed in leadership positions to capitalize on her technical expertise along with her communication and management skills. She has led collaborations between industry vendors, joint projects between industry and universities, and global work teams in multiple international offices.

Dr. Zhang received her Ph.D. from the University of Missouri -- Rolla in 2001. She completed her undergraduate program in Zhejiang University in China with the top honor of the university -- Zhu Kezhen Fellowship. She is also an MBA candidate in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business in the University of Michigan -- Ann Arbor.

Personal

Dr. Zhang was born and raised in Zhejiang, China. Her interests in literature and creative writing complement her career in engineering. She published several essays about life, love and business, both in English and in Chinese. She is also an (infrequent) Internet writer.

Dr. Zhang is active in community services. She led the SAE "A World In Motion" (AWIM) program to promote interests in science and engineering among underprivileged students in the school district of Detroit. She also participated the events of Detroit Chinese Business Association (DCBA) to enhance cooperation between China automotive industry and the Detroit Chinese community.
